Discovering Trapani's old town

You cannot leave Trapani without visiting its old town, walking around its narrow alleys and magnificent main streets where different architectural styles overlap.

Discovering Trapani's old town

To discover Trapani you should start from the sea, especially from the port, where you can sit and watch the ships entering and leaving the harbor: ferries, fishing boats, sailboats, luxury yachts... The old town lies just there, a few steps behind.

As you step out of a boat, you find the peculiar building called the Casina delle Palme, with its gentle Art Nouveau style and the surrounding garden of palm trees overlooking a small stage, which is often used for shows and performances especially in the summer.

The central Via Torrearsa is filled with monuments and buildings of historical value: the solemn Fountain of Saturn  with a fine 17th century statue, the 14th-century Church of St. Augustine, with its refined rose window, now housing the Diocesan Museum; Palazzo Cavarretta, the seat of Trapani municipality until the mid-19th century and still used for city council meetings, As you go down this street, you get to former Fish Market, a half-circle with a portico that overlooks the beautiful city beach.

As noteworthy as Via Torrearsa is the street that was once called the Rua Grande, today's Corso Vittorio Emanuele, with rich Baroque facades like those of the Jesuits' Church and Convent and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.

Finally, today's Via Garibaldi, once Rua Nuova, completes this triptych of great historical and value. It has some more examples of Baroque architecture, both secular and religious, as the fine Palazzo Riccio and the beautiful Church known as Badia Nuova.

The discovery of Trapani continues within the old city, in a maze of narrow streets with an unmistakable Arabian atmosphere. You may happen to come across the old Jewish quarter, where once stood the Palazzo della Giudecca, or the Church of Purgatory, so important for the locals for it houses their beloved "mysteries", i.e. the 18th-century papier-mache statues that every year, at Easter, are carried in the Good Friday procession.

At the end of Corso Vittorio Emanuele lies the San Francesco neighborhood, densely populated by families of fishermen and sailors. This is a narrow strip of land bordered by the "two seas", the extreme tip of the city, ruled by winds and over which watches the 17th-century Tower of Ligny, now housing an interesting museum of the sea.

Next to it there is another isthmus, facing south, where stands another symbol of the city, the fortress of the Colombaia (Dovecote). Built on an island just a few strokes of oars from the coast, it also serves as a "natural" protection for the small and picturesque fishing port.
