Levanzo's cave Grotta del Genovese: Europe's earliest paintings and carvings
The Grotta del Genovese is located on the north-west coast of the small island of Levanzo, the smallest but not the least attractive in the Archipelago. It lies about 10km west of Trapani and 20km north of Marsala. The cave is famous for its prehistoric art, and contains both paintings and carvings.
First there are naturalistic pictures of animals and three human figures which are comparable to the art of French and Cantabrian caves. Then there are more schematic paintings and symbols which resemble the art of the Spanish Levante.
The items which were found in this cave are now removed, but not the impressive paintings, which were dated to be between 11,000 and 12,000 years old. There are both engravings and drawings with mostly black colour. The upper scenes show daily life, especially hunting. The lower scenes show animals, with some extraordinary pictures of dancing men. Really special is the scene with a tuna fish, which proves that man is fishing for tuna here for at least 10,000 years!
Although very remote on a very small island, this is one of the most important Italian painted caves and thus well worth a visit. At the time when the paintings were made, the island was not so remote, in fact it was connected to Sicily and Sicily to Italy. The sea level was much lower at the end of the Ice Age as a great deal of water on Earth was frozen into large glaciers. Actually the graffiti date back to the time just before the sea swallowed those parts of land that linked the Egadi islands to Sicily. The paintings date back to 5-6 thousand years ago, at the end of Neolithic, when Levanzo was already an island.
These primitive human messages make it a sort of prehistoric sanctuary as religion and culture took their first steps at a time when men and animals where still bound to one another by an ancestral connection.
