CUSTONACI: history, traditions and nature on marble mountains
Custonaci is the city of marble, home to Sicily's largest marble quarries, the second largest in Italy and Europe. The village lies on the edge of an area of great natural interest, the nature reserve of Mount Cofano. There, in the beautiful natural cavern Grotta Mangiapane, customs and traditions of early 20th century Sicily come alive during the Living Nativity (Christmas holidays) and the Living Museum (in the summer). Do not miss in the summer the festival of Our Lady of Custonaci, with the landing of a vessel carrying a copy of a worshipped painting of Our Lady (whose 15th century original is kept in the local sanctuary).
Custonaci is a town founded in the late-1700s and located between Mount Erice and Mount Cofano. It actually lies in the most mountainous area of the Province, with Monte Sparacio rising over 1,100m. The city economy primarily relies on the marble mining and processing. Its marble types are worldwide famous.
The other thing Custonaci is famous for is its "Madonna", portrayed on a very fine 15th century painting. The church of Our Lady of Custonaci is a major site of pilgrimage for locals and beyond. This church has been built on an old chapel in different epochs, therefore combining different styles and features spanning the Gothic, the Romanesque and the Renaissance.
With its unspoilt shore, Custonaci is a popular tourist destination in the summer. Particularly attractive are the seaside resorts of Cornino and Cala Buguto. Along the coast, a foot path winds its way past the 16th century tower and all around the pyramid-like Mount Cofano. Two other trails, the Scaletta di Frassino and Scaletta di Maruzza, climb up the top of the mountain, skirting two impressive gorges and a splendid Mediterranean vegetation.
Old farms and villas with their typical inner courtyard (bagli) are found across the area, as well as several grottoes and caves, the most impressive of which is "Grotta Mangiapane" with a picturesque hamlet built outside the actual grotto. There, every year a Christmas a Living Nativity is set up, with locals reconstructing the actual life of this hamlet from the 19th century.
In sum, Custonaci offers a unique mix of archaic landscapes with lush vegetation of wild beauty, sound agricultural roots and strong religious traditions: in a phrase, Sicily as it once was.
