Visiting the Pepoli Museum, with its paintings and coral works
The Pepoli Museum of fine arts is located in the former Carmelite convent standing next to the Church of the Annunciation in Trapani. It houses collections of paintings and sculptures and a unique collection of coral, pottery, gold and silverware.
To discover Trapani you also need to visit the Church of the Annunciation and the adjacent Pepoli Museum of fine arts. The church notably houses the statue of the "Madonna di Trapani", a valuable sculptured attributed to the famous fourteenth-century Tuscan sculptor Nicola Pisano. According to legend, the statue was brought to the city from the sea after a storm. From the garden of the church, which is located about 1km from the historic center, you enter the adjacent former Carmelite convent, today's Pepoli Museum.
Along with collections of paintings and sculptures the museum enshrines a compendium of local art traditions, particularly decorative and applied arts, which made Trapani famous: pottery, gold and silverware and most of all coral works.
The core collection consists of the private collections of Count Agostino Pepoli who founded the museum in the early twentieth century. In the following years it was expanded with other works from the former religious corporations and from the Fardelliana gallery (mainly paintings from the Neapolitan school which General G. B. Fardella donated to his hometown).
The original collection was further enriched by bequests, donations and deposits with other collections of antiques and applied arts.
