Cous Cous Fest 2012
from Tuesday, September 25, 2012 to Sunday, September 30, 2012
In 2012 the Cous Cous Fest celebrates fifteen years “Making Couscous, not War”. It is a culinary contest for countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area and beyond, taking a cue from the couscous, a staple food shared by several populations with different cultures. Nine countries will be the challengers for this year offering their couscous to a panel of journalists and experts, chaired by Paolo Marchi, a food and wine journalist and the author of "Identità Golose”. But visitors also will have their say in a “people’s jury” and both will award the prize for the "Best 2012 Cous Cous."
This event is a harbinger of a colorful world where different cultures, peoples and traditions coexist. This is San Vito's spirit, where couscous is a keystone in the building of a multi-cultural world, a common dish for a peaceful melting pot. Paolo Marchi, a food and wine journalist and the creator of "Identità Golose" will be the chairman of the 2012 international jury.
Nine countries will be the challengers for this year offering their couscous to a panel of journalists and experts, chaired by Paolo Marchi. Next to the experts panel a people's jury will sit where anyone can cast their vote.
Indeed the composition of the people's jury is open to anyone who wants to join. All those who wish to become a culinary judge for one day just have to show up at the welcome desk on San Vito Lo Capo's waterfront. There are as many as 100 seats, on a first come first served basis. Contestants for 2012 will be: Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Morocco, Palestine, Senegal and Tunisia.
Couscous for everyone at the Villaggio Gastronomico (gourmet village)!
From 12am to 12pm, at the Villaggio Gastronomico you can taste couscous of all sorts in the traditional "Couscous houses" i.e. tasting spots open to the public. By purchasing a 10€ ticket, visitors can choose from the many variants of the dish: the local San Vito-style or Trapani-style hand-made fish couscous is available at the "House of San Vito couscous" and "House of Trapani couscous" respectively. More "exotic" versions from foreign countries participating in the event can be tasted at the "House of World couscous", and the "House of Mediterranean couscous".
The ticket also entitles you to a glass of Sicilian wine and a dessert of your choice at the spots of "Dolcemente Sicilia".
The Expo Village
The Expo Village is open from 5pm to 12pm. Dive into this colorful market, a real Oriental Souk, to discover crafts and artifacts from contestant countries and Sicily in particular.
Cous Cous Lab
Cous Cous Lab is the "media container" for visitors, featuring talk shows, roundtables and meetings but also hands-on cooking classes and gastronomic workshops. After last year's success, "Electrolux Experience" is back with Electrolux as the main sponsor of the event, a world leader in the production and distribution of professional solutions for the hospitality and catering sector. Famous Sicilian chefs will star in tasting workshops intended for a happy few. The host is Laura Ravaioli, a journalist and chef.
Al Waha
This is an Arabic name for oasis in the desert and it is the area set up on the beach of San Vito Lo Capo , a gathering place with a fascinating Oriental ambient. Access to Al Waha so far has been limited to special guests, but now it opens to the public upon the payment of an entrance ticket. In a thrilling 1000-square-meter Berber tent, visitors can taste couscous sitting on colorful cushions and ottomans, in relaxed and timeless atmosphere, as Oriental music, percussions and belly-dance are being performed.
Couscous Live Show
Sounds and rhythms from the world will be the soundtrack of the Cous Cous Fest. Each evening a performance takes place on the stage in Piazza Santuario: talk shows, concerts and performances by national and international artists in the program of Cous Cous Live Show. All concerts will take place in Piazza Santuario and are free of charge.
