Marettimo: touring the caves of the 'sacred' island

Of the three islands in the Egadi archipelago, Marettimo lies furthest from nature, like a big rock in the middle of the sea with just beautiful nature, genuine people and sea life on it and around it. Originally known as HIERA (sacred), Marettimo witnessed the most important events of the Punic Wars. Within the Trapani Odyssey theory, some identify it as the ancient and legendary ITHACA, home of Ulysses. Marettimo is full of caves and coves and the sea around the island is just so beautiful that you won't believe your eyes. Besides the sea and the coast, Marettimo is remarkable for the mountain full of walking and biking trails (at different levels).Of the three islands in the Egadi archipelago, Marettimo lies furthest from nature, like a big rock in the middle of the sea with just beautiful nature, genuine people and sea life on it and around it. Favignana - Isole Egadi

The island of Marettimo was once called by the Greeks Hiera (sacred) and by the Arabs Gazirat Malitimah, which later became its current name.

It covers about 12 square kilometers and is the highest and most mountainous of the Egadi islands. The Monte Falcone is 686 meters (about 2300 feet) high and next to it rise the other headlands of Punta Mugnone (north-west) Punta Bassana (southeast) and Punta Troia (northeast).

The village itself is a typical simple fishing village sandwiched between the sea and the mountain. From it a number of nature trails depart to reach every corner of the island, take any of them and you will find yourself immersed in a nature that will leave you breathless.

Up on the mountainside overlooking the town you reach the "Roman houses", ruins that testify to the presence of a Roman garrison in the island.

The sea around the island is an indescribable color and insinuates into beautiful caves carved into the rock. Do not miss the "Camel cave" where you can only get by boat, then you can swim down to the romantic gravel beach at the further inside. On March 19th (St. Joseph's Day) the streets of the village are adorned with altars decorated with traditional breads and dinners with more than a hundred dishes, in a show of local folklore. Among the most significant places of the island there are also:
- The Castle: located on a headland called Punta Troia, the Castle was founded by the Arabs in the eleventh century as a lookout tower. Under the Spanish rule in the 17th century it was restored and enlarged to its current size, and in 1795 it became a prison for political prisoners. The castle has been recently renovated and is now open to the public. It houses the Museum of the Sea and the observatory of the monk seal
- The town beach "Scalo Mastro": a pebbly shore with jagged rocks that emerge here and there, it is renowned for having an abundance of small fish and sea urchins.
- The "Barranco": it is an area with a number of caves, "Grotta Perciata", the "Nativity Cave" and more.

- "Cala Bianca" (white cove) is a beautiful beach whose main attraction is the magnificent sunsets that take on the hues of gold, purple and pink, and the presence of dolphins that accompany the passage of boats.
- "Cala Nera" (black cove) and the Lighthouse.

he island of Marettimo is ideal for medium and long stays. A short holiday is not enough to appreciate all its beauties. Marettimo is not only a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers, but also for all those who love trekking, mountain biking and / or are passionate about photography, nature (the island houses many endemic species, some exclusive to it), climbing, with Dolomite cliffs that in some cases dive directly into the sea.
