Erice’s Procession of Sacred Mysteries
from Friday, April 06, 2012 to Friday, April 06, 2012
The origins of this Good Friday Procession date back to the mid-16thcentury, when Catholics used to represent the Passion of Christ in theatrical stage performances. The oldest written testimony for Erice dates back to 1742, when 55 people participated in the animated representation. Even today, the procession unfolds through the narrow alleys of the medieval village where time seems to have stopped and the Passion of the Cross is realistically played in a way that makes the whole community so proud.
If you happen to be in Erice on a Good Friday (i.e. two days before Easter) you will see that during this sacred procession there is no pomp and shouting, but only the drums that announce the passing of seven small groups of statues carried on the shoulders by the townsmen. Windows open, and villagers looks down, those who participate in the streets narrow down the walls to let the procession walk past, all seven groups in a row until the most poignant of all, Our Lady of Sorrows mourning her dead son.
The origins date from the middle of the Procession of the '500, when Catholics used to represent the Passion of Christ in theatrical stage performances. The representation started off at the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, and from there it moved on to the four parish churches (Sant'Antonio, San Cataldo, San Giuliano and the Cathedral).
In 1762 the earliest written documents we know specifically mentions "wooden statues", while indicating a significant decrease in the number of performers, something that completely disappeared by the mid-1800. Over the years, the characters were replaced by groups of wooden statues, whose features were largely inspired by those from Trapani, although smaller.
Today's procession begins on Friday afternoon in the 15th-century church of Sant'Orsola, also known as Addolorata (Our Lady of Sorrows), just off the city wall. The soberly decorated and illuminated "Mysteries" are first lined up outside the church and then are carried on the shoulders, along the steep and rugged stairway leading up to Piazza Carmine and through the rest of the town on the old paved road. The religious pageant lasts for the whole afternoon and is often surrounded by a natural fog (passing clouds, in fact) that creates a magic atmosphere.
